CNC Machinist – Afternoon Shift Lead Hand

Our machining department is adding an afternoon shift and has an immediate opening for a CNC Machinist Lead Hand. This individual must possess skills to machine complex multi-faceted parts, be competent in the use of all types of measuring instruments and must ensure that all tolerances & machining variables are satisfied. The successful candidate will be a professional team player who will help us maintain our strong corporate integrity. This shift will be from 4:00 pm to 2:30 am Monday through Friday. There is a possibility that the 2nd shift will be on weekends instead of afternoons. In that case, the shift will be 6:00 am – 6:30 pm Friday through Sunday.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Lead the shift by providing guidance to CNC machinists, troubleshoot CNC programs and machining issues, provide guidance with respect to manufacturability.
  • Responsible for quality parts produced on CNC machines under the direction of the Operations Manager, such as but not limited to lathes and milling machines.
  • Study and interpret drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, the sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, drilling, precision grinding, and other operations.
  • Responsible for loading parts, proving programs, operating controls, setting offsets, simple edits, and inspection of quality parts for conformance to requirements.
  • Detect equipment malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine within capabilities, controls, or control media as required to ensure the quality of production.
  • Measure and mark dimensions and reference points on material or workpieces as a guide for subsequent machining using precision measuring instruments.
  • Communicate with your leader to resolve machining or quality issues.
  • Operate lifting devices for the movement of parts.
  • Maintaining continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Completion of internal documentation including inspection forms, supply requisition forms, daily time trackers, etc.
  • Responsible for keeping equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment.
  • Required to adhere and comply with all provincial and federal laws, PDC’s ISO quality program and procedures, Company policies, and safety and environmental regulations.
  • Attend and participate in all toolbox, safety, and other scheduled meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skill Requirements:

  • Leadership experience required in a CNC machine shop setting
  • 10+ years of experience operating large hollow spindle CNC lathes in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Red Seal Journeyperson CNC machinist certification preferred.
  • Experience using Matrix Nexus 2 controls.
  • Experience with Mastercam, Solidworks, E2, Fanuc, Siemens, and Mazatrol Controls.
  • Conversational programming or G-code experience would be an asset. Ability to edit existing programs and test new ones.
  • Excellent knowledge of reading drawings and specifications with an intermediate understanding of geometric tolerancing and dimensions.
  • Excellent knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts, and other accessories used on various machines.
  • Excellent knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments. Instruments include but are not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators, and scales.
  • Ability to operate lifting devices for movement of parts.
  • Must be adaptable to a changing work environment, competing demands and can manage change, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Ability to detect, isolate, and identify irregularities and malfunctions in machinery and equipment.

Shift:

  • Monday through Thursday, 4:00 pm through 2:30 am (Afternoon Shift)
  • OR Friday through Sunday 6:00 am through 6:30 pm (Weekend Shift)
